Substrate Subcenter, 2024, by Jared S. Tarbell builds on the generative system behind Substrate, one of the artist’s most iconic works. Created using Processing, the work demonstrates the brilliance of a simple algorithm: lines grow in a specific direction until they reach the boundary of the domain or collide with another line. When a line stops, it spawns at least one new line perpendicular to it at an arbitrary position.
Through this repeated process, an intricate, city-like structure emerges. Substrate Subcenter reflects Tarbell’s artistic and exploratory approach to uncovering possibilities in code, showing how profound and unexpected visual results can emerge from following simple rules.

A deep zoom looks into regions of an interconnected complete graph. Hundreds of nodes are placed at the perimeter of a circle. Each node is connected to every other node forming the complete graph. Hand-picked regions look so deep into the construction that we perceive chaos in an otherwise highly ordered system. I have been using complete graphs ever since I first learned how to connect nodes. It's natural and enjoyable to take a computational system to its extreme.

Dwell eternally in this space of gently flowing particles. 100,000 particles, half dark, half light, are suspended somewhere within a multidimensional noise field. All particles begin life on a shared horizon. Each particle a Movement is then simulated into the future until a single image is eventually captured. This project began life as a performance optimizer and eventually became a tool to contemplate life and death.

Fields of mandalas are composed of curious floral workmanship. Hand illustrated flower varieties are arranged in patterned rings. Occasional recursive constructions emerge within an infinite number of configurations. I wrote this program to emulate the coloring pages my daughters like to work on. I use images like this to meditate and stimulate creativity.

The node is an elementary unit to build structures in computing science. Here they have been arranged in an Archimedean spiral. The distribution of node sizes is determined using the Power Law. While the code for this algorithm is quite simple, evidence of a higher order persists. These images come from an early build of a demonstration video game project. Construction parameters were hand picked for each of the five generations.

Clouds of light are created with a single point moving through space. Several unseen circles of various sizes are randomly distributed in the field. A point randomly selects a circle and transforms its position using only circle inversion. This process is repeated billions of times, leaving behind a faint exposure at each location. Circle Inversion is a beautiful and powerful geometric transformation. I wrote the foundation of this algorithm the night of my first NFT release. It is marvelous in my eyes. Ancient in that it has always been.
