Jonathan McCabe
Jonathan McCabe is a generative artist living in Canberra Australia with his partner Kate and son Redmond. He is interested in theories of self-organisation and systems which autonomously produce patterns, particularly Alan Turing’s theory of morphogenesis and cellular automata including Conway’s Game of Life.
He studied at the Australian Centre for the Arts and Technology and obtained a Master of Electronic Arts in 2000.
He has provided works for Blackdove, LED.ART, Aesop, Expo 2020, Cirque du Soleil, Imagine Dragons, Le Meridien, Moment Factory and 4U2C. His work has been featured by Wired, New Scientist, Scientific American, the BBC, the ABC, Elephant Magazine, Design Boom, and It’s Nice That. He collaborated with Oleg Pashkovsky and Knot (Portland, Oregon) on a large-scale interactive work “Morphogenesis” installed at the Bass Biology Building at Stanford University in 2019.
His work is influenced by Karl Sims, Stephen Wolfram, John Holland, Benoit Mandelbrot, Stuart Kauffman, Aristid Lindemayer, Michael Barnsley and Alan Turing.

Evolved Turing Pattern, 2026
In his 1953 paper The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis Alan Turing hypothesised that a system of interacting chemicals could spontaneously produce a pattern of stripes or dots. The simplest model is that chemical “A” stimulates its own production and also that of chemical “B”. B destroys A and also itself. If B diffuses or spreads faster than A, a stable pattern of regions of high A separated by gaps develops.
In this work 128 Turing patterns of various sizes interact, re-enforcing or eroding each other. Forms emerge from the initial chaos of random initialisation of pixels. A semi-stable packing of rounded shapes develops, never settling to a final pattern.
This set of Turing patterns was evolved from an initially random population of 1000 sets of 128 patterns. New sets were made by randomly taking half the patterns from one set and half from another. The most interesting sets were selected and recombined over 11 generations.
